The seasonal traditonal event of chrysanthemum hold on 9th September every year is called
重陽の節句【Choyo no sekku】or菊の節句【KIKU-no-SEKKU】.
In Japan, Chrysanthemum is a symbol of royal family and the image is very noble.
It’s also very popular as Autumn flowers.
It is an event to decorate chrysanthemum flowers wishing our health and long lifetime.
重陽【CHOYO】literally means “overlap positive things”.
The idea of 陰陽五行【IN -YO/GO-GYO】;Every things in the world can
be divided into 陰Negative property, 陽Positive property and five elements ；（火 Fire 水 water 木 wood 金 metal 土 soil）.
This philosophy is imported from ancient China .

the lucky number twice and seemed as very auspicious day.
This is one of 五節句【Go-sekku】; five main seasonal events settled in Edo era.

Other main seasonal events are 人日【JIN-JITSU】Seven on 1/7,桃【MOMO】or peach flower in Girl’s day on 3/3,菖蒲【SHOBU】or Iris in Children’s day on 5/5, 七夕【TANABATA】or Star Festival on 7/7.

In Japan, the lunar calendar had been used until the Western sun calendar
has adopted by Meiji government in 1872.
This year,2017’s 9th September is 28th October in the sun calendar.
Unfortunately, 9th September is too early to enjoy chrysanthemum.
So, we recommends you to visit in October if want to watch this event.

What do you do in 重陽？
It’s an old custom covering chrysanthemum flowers
by silk cotton called 被せ綿【KISE-WATA】literally means “covering cottons”.
Cover a piece of cotton over each chrysanthemum flowers and left them over one night.
Then, wipe our face or body by the cotton it contained dew of chrysanthemum flowers
wishing good health and long life time.
