May 5th is “Children’s day”in Japan.

Families having boys display 鯉のぼり【KOI-NOBORI】KOI-carps stream , 鎧兜飾り【YOROI KABUTO KAZARI】;Samurai armor and helmet display, and eat 粽【CHIMAKI】or 柏餅【KASHIWA MOCHI】.

1.端午の節句【TANGO NO SEKKU】or 菖蒲【SHOUBU NO SEKKU】is one of 五節句【GOSEKKU】Five main seasonal event

端午【TANGO】literally means Fifth Day and this festival is held on May 5th every year.

菖蒲【SYOUBU】is a plant having strong aroma. May is said to be epidemic are prevalent, so

People put them into bathes or hung them on their house’s roofs.

※There are two kind of 菖蒲【Syoubu】;葉菖蒲【HA-SYOUBU】Leaves Shobu, and 花菖蒲【HANA−SYOUBU】Flower Shoubu. The one having strong aroma is leaves shoubu while flower shoubu doesn’t(Though, they are very  beautiful kind of iris flower of blue and perple and Iris flower festivals are held here and there from middle of May and June.
